Federal Eviction Moratorium Ends Soon

8/1/2021

The federal eviction moratorium is set to end Saturday, August 31. Beginning in September, The eviction moratorium barred landlords from evicting tenants who were unable to pay their rent during the pandemic. However, those renters are still liable for all the rent they missed when the moratorium expires.

What does this mean for our youth? After the moratorium expires, there could be a wave of evictions leading to the displacement of thousands and thousands of families in Wisconsin. Research shows that for a child to reach their full potential they must be given their basic needs. This includes food, water, warmth, rest, security and safety. It is very difficult to provide these basic needs for children without a stable living environment.

The good news is that there are resources available for emergency rental assistance. The assistance can cover expenses like back-rent, utilities, moving costs, security deposits, and rent going forward. Families in need of rental assistance should search Wisconsin Community Action Program online. For more information on the eviction moratorium please visit this WPR article.

REACH commits to improving the physical, social, emotional, and economic health and well-being of Waupun area youth through building relationships and providing opportunities. If your family or one you know is struggling with necessary resources, please contact REACH. We are committed to helping families get what they need to be successful.

Have a great August!
Darian Schmitz, REACH Executive Director
